Liz Carmouche versus Marloes Coenen

On the 5th of March, Liz Carmouche put her undefeated streak on the line vying for Marloes Coenen’s Strikeforce title. The 135 pound champion, Marloes Coenen, is 18-4 and fights out of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Her challenger, Liz Carmouche, 6-0 and fights out of San Diego, California. Liz took this fight on short notice as Miesha Tate sustained a training injury. Liz weighed in at 134 on Friday and Marloes was 135.

Round one begins with the ladies exchanging kicks. The crowd grows restless as Liz can’t seem to find range but also evades Marloes punches. They are working on the cage. Liz kicks Marloes leg. Marloes foot stomps Liz; Liz responds with two thudding stomps of her own. The ref breaks them at one minute. Marloes lands two solid front kicks to Liz midsection towards the end of the round. I score it 10-9 Marloes.

Liz escapes a standing choke by tossing Marloes to the ground. She lands in Marloes’ guard. Liz stands and avoids an arm bar and lands punches to Marloes’ head. In a side mount position she delivers knees to maloes. Liz gets full mount and rains down punches for a good part of the last minute. Liz 10-9.

The third starts with Liz pushing Marloes to the cage. They both reverse a few times fighting for position. Marloes delivers an elbow to Liz’s head. Liz lands more nasty foot stomps. Marloes lands to Liz side with a few nice knees. Liz takes Marloes to the ground. Liz has full mount, and methodically punches Marloes’ head. Liz isn’t getting a referee stoppage. 10-9 Liz.

Liz initiates a takedown and Marloes lands on top. Liz goes for a triangle but Marloes escapes. Liz gets a single leg landing in Marloes’ guard. Marloes is able to lock in a triangle forcing Liz to tap at 1:29 in round 4.

Marloes is still champion and improves to 19-4 while Liz gets her first loss. Marloes shows a lot of class calling Liz “the future of the sport”. The commission had it scored the same (29-28 Liz) going into the 4th round. Unbelievably, Liz threw 352 shots and landed 221 according to CompuStrike. Liz’s dominant striking shows glimpses of why Marloes is likely correct in saying Liz is the future of the sport.
